The region of Ruffec is situated in the north of the Charente between Poitiers and Angouleme, Cognac and Confolens, and is a region which offers a mosaic of landscapes, culture and history. There are many charming towns and villages in the area – here are some of the highlights:
- Ruffec - a floral town with approx. 3400 inhabitants which offers a wide range of activities including shopping in the town centre and commercial areas, a market every Wednesday and Saturday morning, TGV train station with trains to Paris and Bordeaux, cinema, theatre, library, restaurants and bars. There are also many services on offer including kindergarten, the social and cultural centre, sports fields, tennis courts, gym, running track, fitness centre, indoor swimming pool and leisure complex too. There is also the beautiful Saint André church with a classic frontage and Ruffec castle too

Also, close to Ruffec is Nanteuil en Vallée, a picturesque village in the heart of the Argentor valley with gorgeous stone properties, a church, abbey and arboretum

and Verteuil sur Charente, a charming town with a beautiful 11th century castle

- Angouleme - the beautiful city of Angouleme is the capital of the Charente and the home of the comic strip. With over 100,000 residents, it is a thriving metropolis with an abundance of shops, cafés and restaurants. It is also steeped in history with the old ramparts of the cathedral city to walk around and many museums to visit. In addition, the city holds many cultural festivals such as the circuit des ramparts, a classic car race around the city ramparts and the gastronomic festival, which is a great chance to sample lots of beautiful regional produce

- Mansle - a pretty town set on the Charente river, with the lovely church of Saint-Léger and the floral park of Jean-Pierre Lanson with its hundreds of fuchsias. Around Mansle is the pretty castle at Bayers, which attracts many tourists, as well as the pretty communes of Saint-Groux and Villognon

- Aigre - a commercial town situated close to the town of Cognac and within easy reach of the coast for day trips. This is a pretty, unspoilt townwith approx. 1200 inhabitants, and enjoys one of the best weekly markets in the region. It has built its foundations on the wetland marshes, and now invites you to stroll along the pretty walkways and marvel at the beautiful houses and gardens. Also, worth a look in the surrounding area are Saint-Fraigne, Ligné, Villejésus, Les Gours and Barbezières
- Confolens - a pretty town built in the year 1000, which takes its name from the term confluence. It retains many mediaval buildings including the dungeon, the beautiful half timbered houses, two beautiful medieaval bridges, the first across the Vienne which allows you to explore the Fontorse quarter and the Goire bridge, which leads to the Tanneurs quarter. It is also famous for its annual folk festival held every August, which attracts acts from all over the world. Also to discover around the area are Saint-Germain-de-Confolens, Chassenon, and the lakes of the Haute-Charente – a series of lakes with sandy beaches for swimming and watersports

- Civray - a pretty market town situated on the Charente river in the south of the Vienne region and just 20 minutes from Ruffec. The beautiful church of Saint-Nicolas dominates the town square and dates from the 12th century. With regular antiques markets, pretty cafés and wonderful walks along the Charente river, it is a lovely town to explore. Also within easy reach is the Valley of the Monkeys, a great day out for the family, and also Futuroscope,
- Sauzé-Vaussais - situated in the south of the Deux-Sevres, at the crossroads of Nantes/Limoges (D948) and of Paris/Bordeaux, Sauzé-Vaussais carieys the name “at the heart of the Poitou-Charentes.” The town has approx. 1700 inhabitants, and has a lovely holiday village with a swimming pool, tennis courts and campsite
